Lake Houston Watershed PBL - Chemistry
A year later, our community is still feeling the effects of Hurricane Harvey. In Humble ISD, our students are investigating ways in which they can help restore the water quality in our district's watershed. Through a district wide initiative, our students will be investigating the Lake Houston Watershed and generating various media content to present their findings. Our Chemistry classes at KPHS will be working in conjunction with the Humble ISD Lake Houston Watershed PBL (Project Based Learning) from Tuesday, September 4th - Friday, September 14th. Students will be able to choose from one of four different teams to pursue how they can help our community's watershed. The four teams include:
Data Team - This team will be responsible for collecting water samples from several runoff reservoirs and waterways that feed into the Lake Houston Watershed. From this information, all our students will strive to find solutions for improving our community's watershed. Members of this team will travel to Humble Elementary on Tuesday, September 11th to work with elementary school students in order to teach them about the importance of the watershed and collect water samples from reservoirs located on Humble Elementary property which feeds into Lake Houston.
Book Team - Members of this team will be responsible for generating a children's book revolving around the watershed for students at Humble Elementary School. The topic can range from the water cycle to potential ways to help benefit our watershed ecosystem. The topics are endless! The purpose of the novel is to help educate our younger students about various elements of the watershed.
Public Speaking Team - Members of this team will be generating a speech detailing facts about the Lake Houston Watershed and our findings from the Data Team. These members will be responsible for helping spread the word about our PBL and reaching out to the community with information about our efforts. Certain members could be selected to present their speech during the district showcase in January 2019 highlighting our efforts towards the Lake Houston Watershed PBL.
Media Team - Our final group will be responsible for developing a media piece highlighting our efforts in the Lake Houston Watershed PBL. The primary focus of this team is to acquire pictures, video & interviews to help develop a media piece which will educate the community about the Lake Houston Watershed, as well as, document our findings. Some members of this team will also accompany the Data Team on their trip to Humble Elementary School. Certain media pieces could be selected to present their work during the district showcase in January 2019 highlighting our efforts towards the Lake Houston Watershed PBL.
As you consider which team you would like to be a part of, please review the rubrics below to insure that you pick a team which will be good fit for you.
