    What you need to know about referrals and services:

    • Who should be referred?
      • students may need counseling support for a variety of needs ranging from academic, behavioral, social, emotional support, to supporting through a crisis such as a death or emergency situation such as was experienced by many during Hurricane Harvey
      • any student in need may be referred, noting services are voluntary and can be refused
    • What is counseling and what services are offered?
      • Counseling is a responsive service, used to meet the needs of the whole child, which includes physical, mental, emotional, as well as academic well being
      • Counseling is built on confidentiality and ethics based on the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) adopted guidelines
      • Counseling is designed around individual needs of the student and is a voluntary service
    • How are services provided post referral?
      • Support may be given in an individual approach or small group approach based on needs of the students
      • Counselors strive to build a relationship built on confidentiality and trust, in order to then support goals and progress of students
    • When is counseling provide:
      • services can be administered in a variety of times and conditions, based on the needs of the student.  These may include small group pull out, lunch bunch, recess group, or individual sessions
      • School counseling should be short-term, but based on student needs, in order to build skills that allow the child to be successful in a whole child approach, both in and out of the classroom.
    • Where does counseling take place?
      • most counseling sessions, both group and individual, will take place in the privacy of the counseling office.  Some groups may meet in special locations for special activities, but student privacy is the priority.
    • Other Important Considerations:
      • If any risk of danger either to self or others the confidentiality is broken by duty to report, as safety is the top priority of every student and staff
      • If a student,not at school, is in crisis and in immediate danger, please call 9-1-1 or the appropriate authorities.  Do not wait for referral.  File referral after authorities have been notified.
