Sixth graders from Ross Sterling Middle School graders recently traveled to Austin, Texas to participate in the Enrique "Kiki" Camarena Red Ribbon Rally - an event to honor students dedicated to a drug free life.
The Red Ribbon Campaign originated in response to the tragic death of Drug Enforcement Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who was kidnapped and murdered in Mexico in 1985. This year was the 22nd anniversary of his death. Many feel that Mr. Camarena's sacrifice should not be forgotten. The red ribbon is a symbol representing commitment to the eradication of drugs in our society. The rally was sponsored by Drug Enforcement Agency and other law enforcement agencies.
The students kicked off the celebration at Northwest Mall. At the rally, students learned the history of the red ribbon campaign and pledged to be drug free. Making special guest appearances were Houston Rockets Launch Crew, Mayor Bill White, DEA Special Agent in Charge Zoran Yankovich, News Anchor-CW39 Mia Gradney, and Houston Police Chief Harold Heard.
The rally continued to Austin where the students toured the State Capitol and participated in a mock legislature session in the chambers of the House and Senate. The students simulated the legislative process works by staging the passing of an anti-drug law.
