What is Key Club?
Key club is a high school organization dedicated to helping the school and the community. We volunteer in and outside of school and do numerous drives to help support different charities. We are a well recognized group that will keep serving the community for years to come.
What sort of events do we accomplish?
During the school year, there are lots of different events that we do. We do different drives for things such as school supplies and canned food along with drives in which we collect coke tabs. Also, the KHS key club does such events as dances, help volunteer with special needs kids, volunteer at fairs and a variety of tournaments and along with much more.
What is Kiwanis and how do they relate to Key Club?
For starters, you might want to know the history of Kiwanis....
The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit, Michigan. The group received a charter from the state of Michigan on January 21, 1915, and this is regarded as the birth date of Kiwanis.
The first clubs were organized to promote the exchange of business among the members. However, even before the Detroit club received its state charter, the members were distributing Christmas baskets to the poor. A lively debate ensued between those who supported community service as the Kiwanis mission and those who supported the exchange of business. By 1919, the service advocates won the debate.
Kiwanis became international with the organization of the Kiwanis club of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1916. Kiwanis limited its membership to the United States and Canada until 1962, when worldwide expansion was approved. Since then, Kiwanis has spread to all inhabited continents of the globe.
Kiwanis was defined as “an organization for men” in the constitution and adopted in 1924. In 1987, after several years of debate and growing support, women’s membership received overwhelming approval.
Six Canadians have served as Kiwanis International President. The first International President elected from outside the two founding nations of the US and Canada was Ian Perdriau AM from Australia, who served in 1994-95. Eyjólfur Sigurðsson of Iceland was the 1995-96 International President, and Juan F. Torres Jr., MD, of the Philippines, was president in 2002-03.
Now that we know that it might be a little easier to explain. Because Kiwanis is for people outside of High School, they wanted to help the youth help the community. When Key Club was started they took a high interest in it and wanted to help out. Today, because of this interest, each Key Club has their own Kiwanis support. Kiwanis provides money, ideas, and helpful volunteers whenever Key Club needs them and vice versa.
Who can I talk to about joining?
If you would like to join our club our first meeting is the best way to go, or even the second one. If you can’t make it to one of these meetings you can talk to our sponsors, Mr. Hofstad or Mrs. Sano, or you can talk to our president, Amy or anyone of the officers. Everyone is eligible to join if your current grade point average is above 2.0, but that should not be too much of a problem. We always encourage new members and we look forward to seeing you this year!
When is the next meeting?
The meetings will be every other Tuesday. The meetings will take place in the commons or in the library and you need to bring $13.00 for dues if you want to join.
What district and region are we in?
We are in the Texas-Oklahoma district region 12 and Division 3n
How many points do I need to get?
In order to be in good standing with the club, you must earn a total of 10 points over a period of two months. THE FIRST TWO MONTHS ARE SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER. ALL ten POINTS WILL BE DUE BY THE BEGINING OF NOVEMBER. Then, the next two month period will be November and December. You can either do a project on your own or you can do a project with the club. THE LAST 2 POINT MUST COME FROM DRIVE POINTS. (It is not a total of 12 points, it is 8 service hours + 2 drive.) If you bring one item from a drive, that will be 1 point. If you do not obtain these points and turn them in at the designated time, you are not in good standing. This means that you will be required to get your required points in the next two months along with an extra amount of points. Also, if there is a social in the next two months and you are not in good standing with the club, then you will not be able to attend.
