Quick Reference about Medications and Illnesses

If your child has asthma, diabetes, or any other chronic illness or life threatening food or insect allergy, please contact the school nurse as soon as possible.

It is important to communicate this information with your child’s teacher as well.

If your child needs antibiotics, eye drops, or other temporary medications during the school day, medications must be brought to the school nurse and picked up by an adult.

Please do not send medication with a child.

In addition to a parent’s signature, a doctor’s order will be required for medications given daily at school for more than 10 days.      A doctor's order is not needed for over-the-counter children's medications which are given fewer than 4 times per month.

Medication administration forms (doctor orders) can be found here in the Helpful Documents section.

All prescription and over-the-counter medications must be in the original container.

Prescription medications must also have a pharmacy label with your child’s name on it.

Herbal and homeopathic medications and remedies cannot be administered at school.

Children should be fever free and free of vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school.

Immunizations must be up-to-date for a child to be enrolled in public school in Texas.  Requirements can be found here in the Helpful Documents section.

Please update your contact information with the school’s registrar and school nurse when you get a new cell number or other changes occur.   It is important that we be able to contact you if your child is seriously injured or becomes ill at school.

Please send a change of clothes in your child’s backpack each day.   Muddy playgrounds, cafeteria spills, etc. are to be expected even among older children.
