Volunteer News From Bear Branch Elementary - Extreme Makeover Playground Edition! On an annual basis, areas of our school are assessed by the Humble ISD maintenance department for safety. Last summer, the maintenance department declared our recreational areas to be unsafe due to rust and structural erosion by the outside elements. Unfortunately, the equipment is too outdated to repair and will be torn down this summer. This puts us in a predicament, because per Texas state law, school tax revenues cannot be used to build playgrounds. After Kindergarten, there is no curricular justification for providing a playground. Many low income schools are able to receive community block grants and schools that are a part of municipal utility districts routinely rely on MUDs to fund new playground structures. In Bear Branch Elementary's case, neither of those avenues can be pursued. For this reason, we will launch a fundraising effort to build our students a new playground. And launch a fundraising effort they have! With a fundraising goal of $100,000, Bear Branch Elementary PTA has raised almost $42,000.
